Simon specialises in hip and knee surgery and trauma. He trained in Bristol and South Wales and trained with some of the leading hip and knee replacement surgeons in the UK. He performs over 200 joint replacement operations and over 200 keyhole (arthroscopic) operations for cartilage problems per year. He is based at University Hospital of Wales and University Hospital Llandough. His private practice is based at Spire Hospital Cardiff.
He has a keen interest in joint replacements for younger patients with arthritis and new technology designed to preserve the lifespan of joint replacements and improve the fixation of implants to bone. He uses minimal access (rapid recovery) muscle sparing techniques where appropriate. He regularly performs bone-sparing partial replacements.
He has published in journals such as Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, The Knee, Injury and Hip International.
He is a member of the British Hip Society and British Association for Surgery of the Knee.
He regularly teaches and examines undergraduate students from the University of Cardiff. He trains junior doctors on the Wales Orthopaedic Rotation.
